Chiro Live – the 2023 BCA Conference

In October 2023, Tim Button became President of the British Chiropractic Association after six years at the BCA as Treasurer and Vice President, throughout which he worked closely with the BCA’s Past President, Catherine Quinn, to meet our Vision for chiropractic to be integral to UK healthcare. Tim is a clinic owner who led much of the work on COVID-19 documentation and can be relied upon by BCA members to bring new thinking and energy to BCA endeavours.

In his clinical life, Tim has established Cleve Chiropractic over the last 19 years to the multidisciplinary clinic it is today, where he now leads a highly experienced and knowledgeable team. In 2014, he created a physiotherapy, exercise and rehabilitation clinic to run alongside the chiropractic clinic.

Catherine Quinn (MChiro DC FRCC) was President of the BCA from October 2017 to October 2023, leading the Association through a range of opportunities and challenges. Catherine has been in private practice since graduating from the AECC in 2012 after completing a BSc in Sports Science. She is the Queens Park Rangers FC chiropractor and is in private practice at Cleve Chiropractic, Bristol.

Catherine has delivered keynote lectures on the role of chiropractic within multidisciplinary healthcare teams to both the UK Sports Medicine community at the Football Medical and Performance Association, and Internationally at FICS. She has spoken widely about the need to professionalise chiropractic, ensuring that good governance gives us a solid foundation to do so, the need to support and nurture our future leaders and the value of integrative and collaborative healthcare.

Dr Kirren Schnack is a Clinical Psychologist. She holds a Practitioner Doctorate (PsychD) in Clinical Psychology from the University of Oxford. Her work in mental health services over the last nineteen years has been with children and adults, including inpatient and outpatient NHS departments and in the Law Courts with offenders. She posts accessible, quick advice and information about anxiety, mental health and her practice to her more than half a million followers on TikTok, daily. Jake Cooke DC (MChiro, MScAPP, DACNB, FEAC, FRCC) is a graduate of AECC University College, a diplomate of the American Chiropractic Neurology Board and has a Masters in musculoskeletal neuroscience. His focus is on chronic pain and dizziness/balance disorders. He’s the current Chairman for the European Academy of Chiropractic’s neurology special interest group, with the goal of showing how neurology can be used to improve your assessment, treatment and outcomes.

Steve graduated from AECC University College in 1987 and has developed a clinic in Southampton with a special interest in craniopathy and paediatrics.  Professional experience includes terms as President of SOTO Europe and SOTO International, and 8 years on the General Chiropractic Council in the UK.  

He helped develop and initially teach the MSc APD Chiropractic Paediatrics at AECC UC and authored the book Pregnancy and Paediatrics: A Chiropractic Approach. Steve has lectured widely around the world, in both craniopathy and paediatrics, and taught undergraduate paediatrics at both Barcelona and Madrid Chiropractic Colleges, as well as teaching seminar series in the UK and internationally. 

We are excited to provide members with a unique opportunity to see the TV star, double Bafta winner and Sunday Times bestseller, Dr Chris van Tulleken.

Chris van Tulleken is an infectious diseases doctor at the Hospital for Tropical Diseases in London. He trained in medicine at Oxford University, has a PhD in molecular virology from University College London, where he is an Associate Professor and where his research focuses on how corporations affect human health, especially in the context of nutrition. He works closely with UNICEF and the World Health Organisation in this area.

His book Ultra-Processed People was a Sunday Times and New York Times bestseller. He is one of the BBC’s leading science broadcasters on television and radio for children and adults. He is married to Dinah and they have two children.

Dr Philip Dewhurst

Dr Philip Dewhurst is the Head of the School of Chiropractic at AECC University College and a 2005 AECC graduate. He returned as a member of faculty in 2008 and has been actively engaged in postgraduate studies, research, teaching and clinical practice. Philip’s research interests have been born out of his postgraduate studies within medical education and involve exploring the factors which influence student performance. In 2017, Philip enrolled on a professional doctorate in education (Ed.D) at the University of Reading in which he has continued to explore the academic and non-academic factors which can affect a student’s performance at university. Philip is a registrant member of the General Chiropractic Council’s Education Committee and a member of the Royal College of Chiropractors’ Chiropractic Deans group.

Rhiannon Oakley

Rhiannon (she/her) has extensive experience in marketing, PR and business consultancy and is an experienced Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Consultant. As an executive coach and mentor, Rhiannon works with individuals, teams and organisations around the world to enhance their EDI activities with a focus on improving person-centred communication skills.

She has over 10 years’ experience in the chiropractic field, working as Practice Manager to assist the expansion of her wife’s award-winning inter-disciplinary chiropractic clinic. Rhiannon continues to work with clinics of all sizes to improve their patient journey and processes, in addition to providing individual and group coaching to foster team cohesion and a shared vision for success. Through Oakley Partnership, Rhiannon delivers training, consultancy services, executive leadership coaching and reciprocal mentorship to Local Authorities, the NHS, national and international healthcare membership associations, and healthcare regulators including the General Chiropractic Council (GCC). She has been a trustee for the Chiropractic Research Council since 2022.

Emma Sausman

Emma (she/ her) is a passionate communications professional with a bachelor’s degree in English from Bournemouth University and three years of experience in social media, PR, and marketing. With a versatile background spanning tech to health industries, she excels at crafting compelling narratives and connecting with diverse audiences. Emma has also been a part of the British Chiropractic Association’s press office team for over a year, gaining expertise in navigating the healthcare sector and communicating the message of the BCA.

Emma thrives on utilising the latest digital strategies to engage audiences and drive results, with a key passion for social media. She is committed to bringing innovation and insight to every project, ensuring that messages not only inform but also inspire action.

Philippa Oakley (she/her) graduated from The Welsh Institute of Chiropractic (WIOC) in 2012 and has over a decade’s experience in private practice. In addition to running her own clinic in Wiltshire, she is also the co-director of Oakley Partnership, a coaching and consultancy business specialising in LGBTQ+ inclusive healthcare. As a certified Coach and Mentor, Philippa has worked with the NHS, the General Chiropractic Council (GCC), educational institutions and healthcare membership organisations around the world to provide practitioners with the knowledge and skills to deliver culturally competent care to LGBTQ+ individuals. Most recently, Philippa was the recipient of the British Chiropractic Association’s prestigious “Chiropractor of the Year” award for 2022-2023, given in recognition of her work enhancing Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in the chiropractic profession. 

Faye Deane graduated from The Welsh Institute of Chiropractic (WIOC) in 2007 and has 16 years’ experience in private practice and working as 1st team chiropractor for Leeds United and Sheffield United football clubs. Since 2021, Faye has worked as a Senior Lecturer at Teesside University and has been involved in co-writing the MSci Chiropractic degree and leading the development of the placement provision. She holds a Masters’ degree in International Public and is currently undertaking a PhD in integrated musculoskeletal care. Having interned in both Malawi and Chile, working in primary, secondary and tertiary musculoskeletal healthcare settings and with indigenous communities, Faye believes all chiropractors should act as public health advocates and sits on the World Federation of Chiropractic’s (WFC) Public Health Committee, representing the UK and Europe. Her research interests are integrated healthcare, aging, co-morbidity, chronic pain and the microbiome.   

Faye’s other roles include acting as Co-Chair for the International Federation of Sports Chiropractic’s (FICS) Education Commission, sitting on the GCC’s Investigation Committee and EDI working group and the RCC’s Health Policy Unit.

Simon is the founder of the Academy of Chiropractic Nutrition, a system of nutrition and functional medicine for chiropractors, osteopaths and physiotherapists. Delivered online, its focus is the interface between the metabolic side of health and the neuromechanical system, to allow neuromechanical care to work optimally. He sequently developed the IN Health supplement range of nutraceuticals to support treatment outcomes. A graduate from AECC University College in 2001, in clinical practice Simon splits his time between chiropractic care and a virtual clinic for nutrition/functional medicine.

Kristan Bromley is a retired British Skeleton racer, sports engineer and Olympic sport Performance Director. Kristan competed for Great Britain in the sport of Skeleton between 1996 and 2014, competing in over 125 world cup and championship events and holding British number one rank for 18 consecutive years. After retiring from competing, Kristan moved into sports coaching. He was Head of Technology and Head Coach for the Norwegian Olympic Skeleton Team, 2016-2018, 2018-2020 respectively.

Ulrik graduated from AECC University College in 1991 and has spent much of his career working with elite sport. He was 1st team chiropractor to Leicester Tigers Rugby Club for 12 seasons before shifting shape of ball and is currently at Leicester City FC.  He also worked as part of the official medical team of the London 2012 and Rio 2016 Olympic Games. He is a regular feature at international conferences and runs several seminar programmes focused on hands on techniques.

Jack founded Chews Health in 2013 as a company for his clinical consultancy, offering second opinions to local sports clubs and teams whose therapists and coaches were struggling to mastermind the recovery of some of their key athletes. As his philosophy and methods spread across the Physio profession and MSK industry a consultancy network emerged and eventually Chews Health services were sought after enough to need a bespoke facility. 

Alongside his role as MD of Chews Health, Jack hosts The Physio Matters Podcast – a monthly show which goes out to over 20 000 therapists and is the director of MSKReform – a non-profit think-tank which is tasked with improving the industry to reduce the unjust variations in care standards. He lives with his wife Charlotte and their identical twin boys who are affectionately known across social media as ‘Test and Control’!

Richard Brown has served as the Secretary-General of the World Federation since 2015 in which capacity he serves as the international ambassador to the chiropractic profession. Prior to this, he held roles as the Secretary-General of the European Chiropractors’ Union and President of the British Chiropractic Association.

He qualified as a chiropractor from AECC University College in 1990 and retains a full practising licence. He has been awarded fellowships of the BCA, Royal College of Chiropractors, European Academy of Chiropractic, International College of Chiropractors and AECC UC. He has a Masters degree in Law from Cardiff University and is an experienced chiropractic expert witness. With a particular interest in the biopsychosocial model of spine care, he has a diploma in counselling skills and special interest in health care communication.
