The BCA is pleased to endorse Sport England’s recently published Physical Literacy Consensus Statement, developed by Liverpool John Moores University’s Research Institute for Sport and Exercise Sciences, in collaboration with academics from Coventry University, the University of Gloucestershire, the University of Bradford, the University of Waikato, Dublin City University, University College Cork, and Deakin University.
The Physical Literacy Consensus Statement for England has been developed to facilitate a shared understanding of physical literacy for those working in the sport, education, physical activity, recreation, play, health and youth sectors. The statement offers a broad overview of physical literacy, why it matters and how it can be developed and supported.
Dr Lawrence Foweather, Associate Professor in Physical Activity and Health at Liverpool John Moores University, who also spoke on the subject at Chiro Live 2024, said: “This statement is an education piece, with aim to develop subject knowledge and understanding of physical literacy, which can then be used by BCA members to better promote physical activity across the life course among their patients. It also provides a framework by which we can consider an individual’s preferences, strengths, needs, circumstances, and past experiences of movement and physical activity – a person-centred approach within the context of movement and PA“.
