World Spine Day highlights the importance of spinal health and wellbeing. Promotion of physical activity, good posture, responsible lifting and healthy working conditions will all feature as people are encouraged to look after their spines and stay active.

This international awareness day takes place annually on 16th October. This year’s theme is “Get Spine Active” (#getspineactive), by simply moving more. BCA members will be supporting #WorldSpineDay2019 using their range of resources to encourage people to ‘move more’, in whatever way is best suited to each individual.

An estimated one billion people worldwide suffering from back pain, it affects all age groups, from children to the elderly. It is the biggest single cause of disability on the planet, with one in four adults estimated to suffer from back pain during their lives. Prevention is therefore key and this year’s World Spine Day will be encouraging people to take steps to be kind to their spines.

The steps can be as simple as walking more each day, gardening or, (for those with desk-jobs) standing when you’re on the phone. For those who feel they can, moving more could be yoga, jogging/running or swimming.

The World Spine Day resources are free to download and easy to use, so any individual or organisation can come up with your own event to celebrate the day. What’s more, there is a competition for with a prize of $600 for brilliant initiatives on how to mark the day!
