It is well recognised in the scientific literature that the biopsychosocial model is the gold standard in the treatment of acute and chronic back pain. The modern management of back and neck disorders relies on health care professionals taking into account the unique mix of physical, psychological and social circumstances, and not simply the traditional biomedical model of condition-specific management. This requires expertise in motivational interviewing, empathy, compassion and the recognition of yellow flags that are likely to impact on patient outcomes.
