FAQs

  • Can all chiropractic students join the BCA?

Yes! As long as you’re based in the UK and studying an undergraduate course accredited by the General Chiropractic Council, you can join for free!

Simply complete our student membership application form.

  • Do I have to be insured with the BCA before I register with the GCC?

    Yes.

When you apply for registration with the GCC, you’ll be asked to provide proof of your indemnity cover with your application (along with a GP letter and other requirements).

We advise applying for your membership and insurance at least a couple of weeks ahead of when you plan to start practising as a chiropractor, so there’s plenty of time to get everything organised.

Our insurance team will issue your documents showing your insurance start date so the GCC will be able to see that you’ll be covered from when you start work.

    Apply for practising membership here.

See our 'How to register' Guide for more information about the GCC registration process.

  • Can I be a BCA member if I get insurance elsewhere?

    Yes.

The vast majority of BCA members join us because of the robust protection they receive with our insurance product. However, if you have sourced your insurance elsewhere (perhaps your clinic has another provider), you can still join the BCA as a member-only.

You’ll receive all of the non-insurance benefits that other BCA members receive including access to HR and employment support, BCA Sessions, discounts on conference tickets, practice management and advice, incident reporting, and much more.

You can complete the same application for practising membership, just click ‘no’ when asked if you need insurance.

  • Can I join before I have an exact date to start work?

    Yes.

As part of the practising member application form, you’ll be asked the date that you’d like your membership and insurance to start. This is usually the date you plan to start work, however, if your start date isn’t yet fixed, you can add any date for now (as long as it is in the future) and change it later.

The only thing to keep in mind is that the cost of your insurance is determined by how many months you’ll be in practise. If you think you’ll start work in the middle of September, you can add your start date as 1 September to be on the safe side as this won’t make a difference to your fees. However, if you add a start date in late August, you’ll also have to pay an insurance fee for August too.

If your start date changes or is pushed back, just let us know by emailing enquiries@chiropractic-uk.co.uk. Our team at BCA Insurance Services is always happy to help.

  • How far in advance of starting work can I join the BCA?

There are various rules regarding insurance. One of these is that your insurance documents cannot be issued more than 60 days before the policy begins.

You can apply at any time – just be aware that there may be a delay between you completing the application form and your insurance finalised and documents issued if you submit your application form more than a couple of months in advance.

  • How much will membership and insurance cost?

If you’re still studying, student membership of the BCA is free.

For those who have recently graduated, you can join as practising members. In the year you graduate, you won’t pay any membership fees; you’ll only pay for insurance from the month you start work (not for the full year). The BCA also has a subsidised membership subscription rate for the first couple of full years in practising membership.

See our Fee Calculator to find out how much you’ll pay.

  • Can I pay by direct debit?

Membership is free for students. Those who've graduated also don't pay a membership fee during their year of graduation - just an insurance fee for the months they'll be practising.

Membership and insurance fees for the year are collected over 10 months (January to October), so you can only join the direct debit scheme if your first payment is due to be taken on, or before, 1 June.

If you join later in the year, you’ll need to pay for the remainder of the year in full, but you will be sent a direct debit mandate to complete to join the scheme for the next year.

  • What’s the difference between ‘provisional’ and ‘full’ membership?

Both classed as practising members, the only difference between Provisional and Full Members is that the latter group can vote in AGMs and Elections and be nominated for Board positions.

Members who have successfully completed the RCC’s Post Registration Training (PRT) (or the BCA equivalence) are elected to Full Members at the next AGM.

  • Do I have to start/complete the RCC’s Post Registration Training (PRT) to be a BCA member?

    No.

If you choose not to undertake the RCC’s PRT programme (or the BCA equivalent), you’ll stay as a Provisional Member.

Those who successfully complete the RCC’s Post Registration Training (PRT) are elected to Full Members at the next AGM.

The only difference between the two, is that Full Members can vote in AGMs and Elections, and be nominated for Board positions.

  • What if I change my mind about joining/staying with the BCA?

We take pride in our flexible and reasonable approach to our membership and insurance.

From when you apply to join as a practising member you are free to cancel at any time. Refunds on any payments made will be pro-rated based on month or months in practise within that membership year. If you cancel within 2 weeks of your stated start date you will not owe anything (or receive a refund if payment was already made). Please note that, if you were in receipt of our BCA Insurance product, cancellation will be back dated to the inception date. If you have practised in that time, you would need to make sure you had retroactive insurance to cover that period.
